Taxonomist

Who we are

Catawiki is the leading online marketplace to buy and sell special objects. We offer over 75,000 special objects in auction every week — each reviewed and selected by one of Catawiki’s hundreds of in-house experts specialised in Art, Design, Jewellery, Fashion, Classic Cars, Collectables and many more.

We've sold 10 million unique items to date and it’s our mission to become the world’s most popular auction destination for special objects.

We’re an innovative, pioneering and fast-growing scale-up. If you think you can make a difference to our team, go ahead and apply.

About the Role:

As Catawiki continues to grow, we’re seeking an experienced Taxonomist to join our team.

This is a new role within Catawiki: we are looking for someone with core taxonomy expertise to own, improve & strengthen our existing taxonomy, attributes/attribute values, and taxonomy tools. By doing so, your work will then help us improve navigation, search, filters, object submission and many other parts of the user experience that rely on structured data. In practice, this person allows Catawiki’s sellers to easily categorise and submit their objects on Catawiki; and Catawiki’s buyers to easily browse, discover and bid on the objects they are passionate about. Working in close collaboration with data scientists, Product teams as well as Category Management, this role sits within the Master Data team.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop structures to organize our extensive product selection for our users (buyers & sellers) globally
  • Expand and refine data retrieval techniques to utilize our extensive product catalog and ensure products end up in the right place for our users
  • Analyze website metrics and customer behavior data to inform intelligent decisions on optimizing our navigation structures
  • Help develop tools and update product data

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences, Knowledge Management, Information Management, or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven skills in data retrieval techniques: comfortable with spreadsheets, ability to interpret charts and data points in relation to their context, ideally experience with extracting data from self-service BI tools (Looker, Google Data Studio, Tableau, Amplitude etc) and make sense out of it. Bonus if experience with SQL
  • Experience working with catalog and classification systems and creation of thesauri
  • Excellent English language skills. Proficiency in one or more European languages (e.g. German, French or Italian) is a bonus
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Comfortable working with diverse groups of stakeholders
  • Ability to prioritise activities in a changing environment, and to remain calm under pressure
  • Self-motivated and decisive
  • Ability to quickly understand complex processes and communicate them in simple language
  • Someone who is smart, enjoys doing good work, and is genuinely interested in improving the customer experience of our marketplace
