About the role and team

We are looking for a VP of Engineering to lead and manage our software engineering function.

As the leader of the Catawiki engineering team, you’ll be responsible for driving our efforts toward ensuring we have efficient, flexible, and cost-effective technical platforms.  As a manager of managers, you will use your experience and technical acumen to lead the engineering function as it works alongside other Tech Department function peers in sets of cross-functional agile teams. To convey a sense of scale in the role, here are a few numbers:

  • Around 110 people are in the engineering function
  • 12 cross-functional agile teams, grouped into 4 teams 
  • Around 40 microservices [ruby on rails, golang]
  • Around 10 million unique users per month
  • Up to 15-20k HTTP requests per second served

What you’ll do 

  • Guide, mentor and hold your teams accountable.
  • Provide leadership and direction on the Tech Department’s ways of working.
  • Provide leadership and direction for our technical platform choices.
  • Coordinate engineering transitions to improved toolchains and system architecture.

Who you are 

  • B.Sc. in Computer Science or related studies or equivalent working experience
  • 8+ years of software engineering management experience.
  • Successfully managed a tree of 40+ software engineers.
  • Successfully managed multiple agile software teams.
  • Experience and mastery over common patterns and challenges in full-stack web development and microservice architecture.
  • Experience working with some of these technologies (or similar): Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Ruby, Typescript, Go, Ruby on Rails, React, Big Data, Payment Gateways.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, including communicating well across different functions and different levels in an organization.

Bonus if you

  • Have a Master’s, Ph.D. degree, further education or experience in engineering, computer science, or another technical related field.
  • Have worked at other software companies and have a business mindset.
  • Have demonstrable experience of driving consensus on a technical vision and executing on realizing the vision.
  • Have managed teams across multiple locations or remote teams.

This role is based in our Amsterdam office, the Netherlands and reports to our CTO, Tyler Miller.

Our offices and way of working

We have sensational offices in Amsterdam, Groningen, Paris and our newest office in Lisbon. Most of our employees are within commutable distance of one of our office locations and enjoy a hybrid work model. This means we expect you to be in the office 2 out of 5 days, roughly 40% of your working time, to collaborate and connect with each other. The exception is of course, if the job description specifically states that the role is 100% remote, as some experts and sales positions are.
