UX Research Intern

At Catawiki, every day brings the extraordinary! Whether it’s Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula 1 Car, a Woolly Mammoth’s Skeleton, Lady Gaga's Jumpsuit or Usain Bolt’s running shoe, we encounter exceptional objects every day.

We're a one-of-a-kind marketplace for buying and selling special objects! Each week we offer over 75,000 unique items in auction, carefully curated by our passionate in-house experts.

Having sold over 20 million unique objects to date, we’re on a mission to become the world’s most popular destination for special objects. As a growing, diverse and sustainable scale-up, we proudly live by our core values:

  • Taking ownership and driving impact
  • Being open to change and feedback
  • Being passionate about our mission and our customers.

If these values resonate with you, we’d love to explore how you can join us on this exciting journey!

Meet Dolf, our Senior UX Researcher

“I joined Catawiki in 2021, having used it myself to find some cool design pieces for my new apartment and becoming enamoured with the vast range of special objects on offer. We work with buyers, sellers and experts across multiple categories (from coins all the way to classic cars) to make Catawiki the platform it is. In other words: no two days are the same and no two research projects are the same either – we work on everything from strategic questions like “how do we improve discovery?” to running usability tests for new features we’re launching to make the platform better for buyers and sellers. Together with product managers, engineers, data scientists and others, we aim to create the best possible user experience that delights our customers every step of the way.”

How you'll make an impact

At Catawiki, we know our users’ experience is built by the entire journey; from initial brand perception all the way through to selling & buying, paying & shipping, and service & support.

As our UX research intern, you will work under the Senior UX researcher across the business, helping designers, engineers and product managers (among others) understand how to delight our users and how to make their experience as unique and memorable as the objects themselves.

In this role, you will assist our Senior UX Researcher in designing and executing the research we need to understand our users' behaviour, motivations, and pain points - and in doing so “learn by doing” about how to design, conduct and analyse research. You’ll also own helping us capitalise on the research we’ve already done, by better organising and publicising it.

You bring some knowledge of, but mainly an interest in learning about, primary research methods (surveys, diary studies, interviews, usability tests) as well as secondary & expert methods (such as cognitive walkthroughs and desk research).

You will learn about how to gain insights through qualitative methods and create recommendations following quantitative validation.

At the end of your internship, you will have directly and indirectly helped shape our users' experience through an understanding on how to make it more useful, more usable, and more desirable.

What you'll do

  • Support our UX Researcher with designing and running different user research projects - from qualitative in-depth interviews to quantitative surveys to everything in between (no two projects are alike!)
  • Get hands-on in planning, recruitment, facilitation and stimulus creation for research needs
  • Work closely with our trusted research partners to get projects up and running
  • Analyse research findings and help the UX Researcher to communicate these to stakeholders to inform business and product decisions
  • Organise and catalogue and brainstorm how to better publicise our existing research to draw out new insights and get them seen by the right people, at the right time

What you'll bring

  • A strong passion for being the users’ advocate, putting their needs first.
  • Interest in, and understanding of, how user research can have a lasting impact on product and design decisions.
  • Completing a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in psychology, behavioural sciences, HCI, design, or equivalent discipline
  • Some previous experience with qualitative and/or quantitative research (e.g. thesis/dissertation, previous work experience)
  • In order to be considered for this internship, you need to be registered as a student in a Dutch university during the entire internship period. A tri-party agreement will be requested.

Our Offices and Way of Working

Our vibrant offices in Amsterdam, Paris and Lisbon are designed to inspire and connect. Most Catawikians are within commuting distance of one of our offices and enjoy the flexibility of a hybrid work model. This means we typically ask you to be in the office 2 out of 5 days, roughly 40% of your working time, to collaborate and connect with your colleagues. Of course, if the job description specifies that the role is 100% remote—such as for certain expert or sales positions—then that arrangement will apply.

If you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
